As mentioned, the brushes are part of the voltage regulator, which is
held on the back of the alternator by two bolts. One will likely be
very hard to remove due to corrosion, since it is also the ground path
for the exciter circuit. Good idea to have two nice new s/s bolts on
hand (4mm x 18mm long).
Depending on how your VR is made, it might be possible to remove and
replace the brushes. I have used generic hardware store brushes, but
they had to be filed down in one direction to fit properly. You'll need
to solder to do this, also.
Brushes run about $10 for a pair; new VRs are in the $40-50 range.
