What is Torsen?
It's not an unreasonable question, but check the archives for a more
thorough answer and discussion. Like many things on a forum, it has
'history'.
Torsen is in reference to the center differential on some models and
generations of Audi quattros. It is a word made up of the first three
letters of the words TORque and SENsing, and was developed by a company
call Gleason. The design and the name were picked up by Audi, but there
are some other makers out there that use the Gleason Torsen as well. They
aren't Audis, so who gives a crap. See www.torsen.com
There are other brands of torque sensing differentials out there, and of
course a whole host of computer controlled designs. I suspect I speak for
others when I say that the Torsen appeals to me precisely because it isn't
computer controlled.
