Rough start then no start

The problem began with an intermittent rough coughing start,
requiring gentle throttle to coax the engine to start. Once it warmed
up it ran perfectly, except idling lower than normal.

In the garage I pulled the code 2112 so I removed the ignition
reference sensor and the speed sensor, cleaned, replaced the almost
stripped mounting screws.

Then the engine would not start, not even cough and there are more
codes after 2112, 2342, 4431, 1231.

Checking the resistance of both sensors showed nothing wrong.

I replaced the ignition reference sensor with the OEM part, investing
$250CDN...no difference.

The engine cranks fine, no catching at all. I pulled a spark plug and
it is wet with gas.

When I pulled out the engine speed sensor, it had a crease in the
side of the metal sleeve. Perhaps when I pulled it out, I disturbed it?

I installed a known working engine speed sensor from my S6...made no
difference to the sound of cranking without any catching. Worked fine
when I put it back in the S6.

Removed one spark plug wire and using an old spark plug, observed
that there is a spark while cranking, although it looks weak.

After this experiment, the codes I pulled are now:
2111 - engine speed sensor
2112 - ignition reference sensor

I hope someone will say "..oh ya, it can only be ..." before I get it
towed to the friendly, but expensive, mechanic.

Someone please...?
