1984 4k - no start

Check the hall sender connections at the distributor. If is loose, engine vibrations would be enough to cause intermittent failures.
In one of my VW QSWs (same engine and tranny- JT code- as in 4KQ) the plastic wheel inside the distributor broke, causing it to completely fail--no spark. It happened at a gas station right after filling the tank. I started the car and everything went dead 5 seconds or so later.
In any event, $175 just for the hall sender is ridiculous. You could get a whole rebuilt distributor for as low as $85 plus free shipping from e-Bay. As with any purchase on the internet, especially automotive parts, make sure you contact the seller to make sure they send you the correct part.
