window woes

When pulling into a parking lot recently, I rolled up the driver's rear 
window and just before the window closed completely it made 
kind of a catastrophic clunkety-clank noise. Further depression of the 
winder button resulted in a whirring motor noise, with tiny up-and-down 
wiggles of the window, but no closure. The ground was really uneven so
later in the day when I got the car parked on much more level ground, I 
tried again and was able to get the window all the way closed. However, 
now she won't open.

Patient is an '88 80 Quattro.

Any idea what replacement parts might be needed and whether or not these 
are even made any more?

Sorry for the vague email. But I'm betting some of you can recall similar 
experiences with your older patients?
