1984 4k - no start

I own two VW QSWs, '85 & '87, which as you know share the same engine tranny as in the 4KQ and engine still runs fine with either the oil cap off on the valve cover or dip stick out.

Earlier this year someone commented that on Audis' MC1 and MC2 engine codes
the car would run poorly if at all if the dipstick was either loose or off.

I could not believe it so just for the heck of it, the next day I went to test that theory on my '86 Audi 5KTQ.

Indeed, while running at idle speed even after warmed up, if I took the dipstick out enough for seal in it to loose contact the engine started sputtering a few seconds before it quit.

The same resulted when I remove the oil cap off of the valve conver.

I guess that's normal. Any reason for it to quit under such scenarios?
