A4 Avant spewing oil

Yes, oil cooler orings are pretty common failures on the v6's, 12v and 
30v variants. A cheap fix with the 3$ or so o-ring. You can opt to 
unthread the oil filter stud, which will allow you to skip the drain the 
coolant step.
I see these failures more often with Quick Lube style oil change types, 
the oring will tear if the filter is overtightened.
