A4 Avant spewing oil

if the oil cooler o ring is going south it will generally leak for a while.
on my a4 it was enough to give a nice coating of oil mist all over the
engine bay, but not enough to drip onto the ground. did this for a few
months [like 24] before i got to it [i know.. i know..].

Not sure what your oil smell is, can't imagine why it would be related to
firm stops. There's several places the 1.8 will mist / leak oil that will
cause an oily smell - my leaky o ring definitely did. valve cover gasket,
pcv parts, oil cooler lines and gasket, among other.
