Audi Clutch Job $$$

Hi Guys,
I got a '98 30-valve 2.8L A4Q. Few months ago I gave it to the wife, now the
clutch is toast. Took it to local mechanic to find out that this model has
some weird (never seen this before) 2-piece flywheel that cannot be
resurfaced. New flywheel cost ~$650!!! This makes the total clutch job bid
at around $1500, which is honestly not worth it for that car!
I could not find any cheaper solid substitutes - nobody even makes a clutch
for this car. Mechanic understandably cannot warranty anything if I just
throw a new clutch disk without new flywheel - the old one is pretty
mangled...
Ideas? Or is this another built-in obsolescence item designed to get me to
go buy a new car?
