4-Motion

Steve and Ed,
VW uses "4-Motion" the same way Audi uses "Quattro," as a marketing
term to indicate that the vehicle has some sort of all wheel drive.
It has nothing to do with the actual mechanical system used to
provide the all-wheel drive. Witness the Haldex system used in the
TT Quattro (mechanically identical to my VW R32) vs the geared system
with a center mechanical differential in the A series (excluding the
A3).
VW used to use "Synchro," and currently uses "4-Motion" the same
way. My Quantum (ne Passat) Syncro was an Audi 4KQ mechanically yet
the Vannagon Syncro used a viscous system in a similar manner to the
current Haldex. I think that VAG used the more mechanical systems on
longitudinal engine configurations and a different system for
transverse orientations.

'04 VW R32 - is it a VDub with Audi guts, or an Audi with VDub skin?
