This brand of trans problem isn't the car's fault. The previous owner hit a
cinder block in the street. The trans pan crushed inward in such a way that
it broke the trans filter so it wasn't picking up fluid. It seems that he
didn't shut it down promptly like he said he did because after replacing the
pan and filter (while still owned by him) the car still has no go. I was
able to purchase the car for less than the cost of replacing the pan and
filter....
If you put it in drive (or any non-park/neutral position for that matter)
theres the *slightest* hint that it wants to move, then the trans goes to
limp mode. It produces code 17114 'Incorrect gear ratio'. My father as well
as another co-worker are factory VAG trained in older autoboxes and have
been arround the block a few times. I figure that it's worth a shot to tear
into the thing - it's already broke, I can't possibly do worse. I have a
source for internal parts, so I'm not worried about that. I also have a
source for a replacement trans and it seems like there's no way this one can
be shipped somewhere and repaired for what it'll cost me to just get another
one. I'll take tons of pictures (as always).
