You can wrap a little duct tape around or better yet epoxy a piece of metal  
to the bottom of the handle lever where it meets the latch, this will give it  
that extra movement needed.
 
Just remember when opening a early 80's VW product door .....PIBYS (Push In  
Before You Squeeze)
