OOOOps! "releases oxygen"???? No way, Jose!
The oxygen in oxygenated fuel has already done its damage as far as
oxidizing something else is concerned. The ethanol (the usual
"oxygenated fuel" added to petrol) serves mainly to reduce the
average energy content of the fuel which reduces the tendency for the
engine to knock while using poorer quality (read "cheaper") fuel.
This allows the petroleum companies to utilize lower quality fuels in
its products. It also provides a huge subsidy for large corn
producers in some of the red states.
Profit margins, anybody?
