i thought the compression gain would be in the combustion chamber???is there wiring changes involved with swapping the block instead? i'm not prepared to change the wiring harness.

Yes, but you will have to swap the manifold and CIS intake layout too. 

To really gain any advantage power-wise, you need to swap the engine - 2.3l is high compression.  You can use the 2.3 block with 2.2 head, but Beware that some CIS tuning may be needed to prevent lean condition when running full out if not using the later CIS-E3 system.

wondering if the 2.3 l i5 head will go on the older 2.2 l block? the 2.3 head is from a '88 90q and the 2.2 is an '86 cgt.
