If the key was sheared the crank locking pin wouldn't work when the  
harmonic balancer was at the timing mark. I also did not remove the crank pulley  
and change the main seal just from the fear of shearing the key. This may 
prove  out to be a bad decision later if I get a main seal leak, but right now 
I have  other problems to worry about.
