2006 VW Jetta Trunk latch

I've had the same issue with a 2005 A6. I've seen a post on another site where someone said there is a new 
version of the release mechanism. 

Mine only does it in colder weather. I tired to slam the crap out of it but it still wouldn't latch. I found that if I lock and unlock the doors ....not the trunk....remotely a few times the trunk will latch when I close it......no slam required. I believe it worked  when the final lock/unlock sequence was locked.

Anybody have the solution for the trunk latching gremlin on this car?
 
Sometimes it latches, sometimes it gets stubborn and requires many slams to
get it to latch. The exterior release is a tilting VW emblem if that's any
clue.
 
No problem with release.
