Robert,

I agree with the clear codes, drive & rescan suggestions. Fault codes 
can remain stored for very long periods of time & may have nothing to do 
with your current problems.

FWIW, I get the 'ZF output....' fault code occasionally on my 2002 A4. 
It is, apparently, a well known 'phantom' bug in the radio firmware, 
IIRC. Nothing to worry about.
