Fuel grade in A6 4.2

Almost all recent engines will tolerate lower octane fuel and adjust timing
accordingly.
However, especially if it is driven smoothly, you may tell your friend to
try a few tanks of premium because usually mileage is better, sometimes
enough to recover the higher price (here the difference in $ is about 6%).
If she drives like a maniac, then she'll only get too fast sooner so regular
is indeed a good idea :-)

A friend and coworker of mine just got an A6 with the 4.2 engine. It is a
2000 model year. It calls for 91 octane. If he is willing to be a little
down on power can he use 89 mid grade? I seem to recall that it will just
retard timing. Is this correct?
Thanks
Eric
