Fuel grade in A6 4.2

Like I say, that is just what my mechanic told me.claimed to have seen it
quite a bit.  What I do know is that I drove it the same if not better than
I drove my 91 200 20v that I always used premium in and put 50,000 mile on
without a problem (sold it with over 200,000 miles)

It's got to be some other cause. Not running premium wouldn't cause that.
Perhaps you do a lot of very short trips in that vehicle?

A friend and coworker of mine just got an A6 with the 4.2 engine. It is a
2000 model year. It calls for 91 octane. If he is willing to be a little
down on power can he use 89 mid grade? I seem to recall that it will just
retard timing. Is this correct?
