Fuel grade in A6 4.2

I always have run 93 octane in my '00 A6 4.2. I did try 89 octane a couple
of times when 93 had reached almost $4 / gallon and 89 was ~$0.30 less a
gallon, and my mpg did drop slightly (probably due to my heavy foot). Like
someone else mentioned, for a 21 gallon fill-up, 93 octane only runs ~$2
more than 89, and provides better performance and fuel economy.

Subject: Fuel grade in A6 4.2
A friend and coworker of mine just got an A6 with the 4.2 engine. It is a
2000 model year. It calls for 91 octane. If he is willing to be a little
down on power can he use 89 mid grade? I seem to recall that it will just
retard timing. Is this correct?
Thanks
Eric
