Fuel grade in A6 4.2

A mechanic I know showed me the carbon damage to an A6 engine he was
redoing the heads on and told me that's why he only uses Shell's top grade
in his S8.  Made a believer out of me.

I just read the Top Tier website.  Interesting.  I typically avoid the only
Top Tier retailers in my area, Conoco and Shell.  I will more than likely
stop in there at least once in a while in the future.  I occasionally use
Techron, GM Top Engine cleaner, and BG 44k.

Not sure if this is true for a 4.2, but I took my passat 2.8 into my local
independent audi/vw mechanic because it was running poorly and even dying.
They said it had carbon buildup in the head due to not using premium (I had
been using plus) I was skeptical at first, but they cleaned out the carbon
and it ran like a champ, they told me to only use premium.  Now that is all
I use in all of my cars, since they all call for it.  Wouldn't use it if
they didn't

A friend and coworker of mine just got an A6 with the 4.2 engine. It is a
2000 model year. It calls for 91 octane. If he is willing to be a little
down on power can he use 89 mid grade? I seem to recall that it will just
retard timing. Is this correct?
