Is my brake booster toast?

The car is an 80 Quattro with a MC1 swap. Running the stock brake system
without issues for years until recently when the pedal went very soft.
Pulling the master cylinder showed the booster "can" with quite a bit of brake
fluid. While replacing the MC I noticed a potential issue with the
booster. The metal rod between the booster and the MC came out. It looks much
like an intake or exhaust valve, with a stamped part over the "head" to hold
it in place in the booster. It looks like I can just push it back in
place and remount the MC, but bleeding the system is such a joy I don't want to
do this twice.
So is the brake booster scrap metal or do I just push everything back
together and continue.
On a good note since I got a 93 MR2 turbo having the quattro down for a
while isn't a big deal. Won't even miss it until the winter time.
