If possible, try removing the drive from the external enclosure and 
install it into a PC. Most often the issue is with giving enough power 
to these external drives. USB can only supply so much power. It results 
in failed reads or corrupt file table entries, but usually the stuff can 
be recovered.

If you must run off USB then rather try to run it through an powered USB 
hub as those offer a little more power than alot of the USB ports on 
laptops or PCs.

Once the drive is in a PC, if you still can't access the files then use 
an application such as GetDataBack or Recuva 
(http://www.piriform.com/recuva) and have it attempt to recover the files.

Also don't add anything or move anything around the faulty drive as this 
could overwrite what is there.
