Gents... a short story regarding a 10V turbo in this car.
In early '82 I was killing time one afternoon at Brumos Porsche-Audi in
Jacksonville FL. Chatting with a salesman about the current crop of cars he
launched into a mini-rant about the recently introduced quattro Coupe.
(Yes, the first year it was offered was '83 but Audi had sent some demo
units around the country and Brumos had one.) He said that it was a very
impressive car and the test driver had terrified everyone with its cornering
velocities. But, he contended, it was far too expensive with the $34K
price. He suggested that instead of purchasing quattro coupe that an astute
buyer could purchase both a Porsche 944 and the Audi Coupe GT Turbo for a
total of less than the quattro.
What is a Coupe GT Turbo I asked. Oh... he went on... here at Brumos we
take the engine from a (first generation) 5000 Turbo and put it into the
Coupe GT and because it's all Audi the warranty is still good. Said it was
quite a nice car and the few buyers enjoyed it.
I never saw one or heard of anyone that had one but was assured that Brumos
made 'some' of them.
So then... there is precedent for the 10V turbo in the Coupe GT. With the
many years of 10V owner refinements and contemporary engine management
systems one could put together quite a nice car. I have no suggestion as to
which transmission could be used. After the current round of modifications
(now in progress) my '87 5KCSTq should be running around 270hp with modest
12-16lb boost. A Coupe GT with that much power would be quite a treat.
