Hi Y'all,
A week or so ago I was querying about modifying my urS-car's frog
lights to use HID bulbs. To do that successfully I needed to be able
to have them on and leave them on regardless of whether the high
beams were on or not.
Success!
Modifying wiring to keep frogs on:
Pull the fog light relay and insert a jumper across the two load
connectors of the relay socket. That's it.
Installing HID kit:
Read the instructions provided with the kit. They are sketchy but
do caution you not to touch the glass part of the bulbs.
Purchase a conversion kit off eBay for ~$40-$50. I got a Xentec kit
but others are available. Specify H3 bulb and 5000K color
temperature (assuming you want a bright white light rather than the
boy racer "KEWL" purple look. Remove the whole headlight (much
easier to work on when it is out of the car). Open the back cover of
the headlight assembly and then pull the OEM H3 quartz-halogen
bulb. While there pull the brown ground wire circular spring clip
which holds the brown ground wire to the bulb socket.
Now install the replacement HID bulb in the H3 socket. Locate a
place in the case where the wiring from the HID bulb will easily
reach and drill an appropriately sized hole for the rubber grommet
supplied with the bulb. Fit the grommet into the new hole with the
ends of the bulb harness through the hole. Also drill (or make use
of an existing hole if you have already converted your low beams to
HIDs) for the smaller two wire pigtail from the ballast. Insert that
pigtail through the hole and attach the RED wire (spade lug
connector) into the spade lug vacated when you pulled the OEM
H3. Now clip off the circular connector and strip a short end of the
brown ground wire and then crimp on a female spade lug
connector. Plug the spade lug of the black wire into the new ground
lug. Close up the back of the headlight assembly and plug the two
sets of connectors to the ballast assembly (they only go one way).
Now put the headlight back into the car (be sure the ballast and
wiring, etc, precede the light into the mounting position). Once the
light is secured find a suitable location to mount the ballast
assembly. Double sided tape and/or small zip-ties are supplied for
this purpose.
It's not a bad job once you know for sure the polarity of the ballast
connections. The RED wires go to +12V and the BLACK wires go to
ground. That was not immediately obvious until I finally saw the
tiny + and - on one of the sockets with wires already attached.
Enjoy your new nice bright frog lights. This will make frog hunting
muck more productive. ;-)
