A6 vs A4 summary

Um. Well, the main pro of the 1.8t would be mileage, and weight. But,
just barely.

Although a factory 1.8t might not beat the mileage of an A6 in city, if you
slightly modify it it should easily win out. Just intake and a downpipe
should sharpen things up, I'd guess. I have no direct knowledge, but on my
own 1.8t which is a mazda, the intake brought up mileage by about 2mpg, and
power went through the roof as well. Mostly because they had the worst
intake tract possibly conceivable in this car. They say 21/29mpg factory,
with 24 combines. My car was 24/28 factory, and after modding I have
achieved 33mpg highway commonly (when I had a 50mile one way commute to
work) and between 28 and 20 combined. It comes down to how much you keep
your foot in it (boost).

Also, weight. 3400lbs vs 3759lbs For a 2002 1.8t 5 speed Quattro A4 vs
a 2002 2.7TT 6-spd Quattro. Autotragic transmissions will add weight,
100-200lbs it seems. This means the A4 will be a bit more responsive and
should have lighter steering feel when dealing with curves on the road, as
well as affecting its braking and other areas. If you don't care about
sporty driving (which isn't reprehensible in a 3500lb car already, anyway)
than this should be close to a moot point.

Then you also have the fact that the 2002+ 1.8t's aren't the previous
versions with the very common coil failure. And a few other issues. If
you're looking at a 1.8t car, either way, I'd review the Vw Vortex section
for the 1.8, as well as the various audi forums to decide if you want to get
into that.

I'd say the increased seating capacity and more quite ride of the bigger
chassis would be a no-brainer for me. Its an Audi. They are all pretty
heavy luxury cars, and the bigger they are, the more luxury there seems to
be. Sooooo... if you want the A4 cause its sportier or what not, its the
wrong car, wrong brand, etc. It seems the RS4 might be the exception to the
rule..
