Well, I have no experience of the A6, so I can't really offer you a comparison.
However, I have really enjoyed my

1.8T. I have owned it since new and have done all oil changes at 5k intervals
with M1 ow-40, so my engine is
sludge-free. Buying a used one could be a bit problematic because of this issue,
but I would think you should
be able to find an original-owner car that has been taken care of. And you can
certainly peek inside the oil filler
cap to check the condition. Size-wise, it has been perfect for me. It is tight
now to put me three children (ages
20, 18 and 13) in the back, but that's what we have the Odyssey for. I purchased
my car with the Sport Package,
which gives the car really fine handling. Mileage-wise, I have averaged 23 mpg
over the life of the car, with 90%
in-town, short-trip driving. I just returned from my parents in Saratoga
Springs, NY, and got 437 miles on
1 tank - the 'low fuel' light came on as I pulled into my driveway. The car is a
GREAT highway cruiser, especially
with the 6-speed. I also really like the styling of the car. Was never crazy
about the previous-model A6.

My car is totally stock (other than the red 'T' and 'the headrest mod') but I
would like to put a chip in it as you can easily
get to 200 hp/200 ft lbs for around $500. With the additional 30 hp, the car
would be nearly perfect.

As far as issues, I replaced all of the coil packs over an 18-month period.
First gear in the trans had to be
replaced (under warranty). The timing belt replacement at 75k miles was
expensive ($900 at an independent shop).
Other than tires and brakes, that's about it. I do have a small coolant leak
from somewhere that I haven't figured out
yet.

So far pretty much everyone has come out for the A6 over the A4... And I
am really tempted to go get a 2000-2001 2.7t.

So last chance to convince me I am making a mistake :)

Rob

ps ok so its not the last chance, but I do want to hear some pros of the
A4 1.8t 02-04
