Need info on changing the starter '90 80

I was under my car today replacing the bushing/links on the sway bar. I was on the pass side and looked for the starter. With my head forward of the hub assy, I can see the red cable that comes down toward the front and then reverses itself back to the starter. I can see only a little of the starter, there is what looks like a cast aluminum cover, in the way. If I remove this will it give me more room to see/access the starter.

The starter is not acting up at this time, but when it does, I need to know how to access it or the solenoid.

I am sure that Huw or Cody have done quite a few. 

I hope I don't need to remove the exhaust manifold or header pipe.
