Need info on changing the starter '90 80

On the five cylinder you don't need to remove or undo anything to r'n'r 
the starter.

Perhaps the "cast aluminum cover" you are seeing is the transmission case?

With my head forward of the hub assy, I can see the red cable that comes down toward the front and then reverses itself back to the starter.
