I has been a few years  since I have done it, but I don't recall that the 
headliner was that difficult  to remove. Seems to me it came out through the 
back door. I don't know any other  way to do an effective job. The trouble 
is, for the job to last, you have to  remove the old foam from the headliner 
board. That means sanding or solvent and  a scraper. That wasn't so bad 
either, did it in an afternoon. Anne's Fabrics (if  they have a store near you) 
has headliner material, about $20.00 total.
