I'm going to agree with a few people here on the break in procedure... It
depends on if its been consuming oil like this since 3k miles, but most
definitely if you baby the engine early on, you won't seat the rings with
the cylinder walls. This is pretty important for keeping an engine running
healthily its entire life. IMO you're better off listening to racing guys
than people who work in a dealer garage or drive their car to and from work
everyday. And you'll find any engine builder/race shop will either break
the engine hard on a dyno with a few WOT runs, or a race car will be warmed
up and thrown onto the track for a few hard laps to break in the motor
before being left to sit.

My friend just picked up an 09 focus, and the first thing we did with his
car is take it out and do a number of near redline pulls in 2-3-4th, after
changing the oil for conventional, for his first 500mi.

Either way, to rectify the situation, you may consider changing your oil, it
doesn't sound too bad at 4k/qt, so maybe a 0-W40 Mobilone would help. I
love that stuff, its pretty great. You can go to another brand 20-40w if
you want, this may help the oil consumption. Factory recommendations be
damned...
