Former owner of a 2006 Jetta GLI here (same engine as the A3, the
infamous BPY 2.0T). My car drank approximately 1 quart ever 5000 miles.
This was with a proper break in and use of the correct VW 502.00
approved 5W-40 oil. According to VW (and Audi), up to 1 quart per 1000
miles (!) is no cause for alarm.... umm yeah... really. I kinda got
around the problem by increasing the oil change intervals to every 5k
vs. 10k. Something tells me VW is trying to hide something with that
statement, just stick to the frequent oil changes.
In the end I landed up dumping the car at around 37k. Between the
questionable longevity of the DSG transmission (06's didn't get the 100k
mi warranty extension) and the various problems that others with the
early 2.0T were having, I didn't want to deal with any headaches. Do
some searches on Vortex with keywords like "Cam follower", "blown DV",
and "PCV fault failure". Your A3 is new enough to not have the defective
A/C compressor (another thing my 06 had that was a ticking time bomb),
the other problems have revised parts and TSBs that fix all the smaller
problems. Many are still complaining the revised fuel pump cam followers
are still excessively wearing.
VW and Audi addressed all the 2.0T's major issues with the redesigned
EA888 engines (CCTA, CAEB, etc.) The new motors still drink some oil,
but reports are much more positive on that front. Personally my 2009
Audi A4 2.0T (CAEB) has drank 1qt at 5000 miles which is the first oil
change interval, so far so good at almost 10k on the clock (extra oil
consumption is normal at break-in). Lets not get into how Audi decided
to not include a dipstick in their new cars...
