Fuel gauge and Directionals

 Ok, here is the deal. Two weeks ago, I ran the tank down to way past E *if
you must, insert the Seinfeld reference here, but it was not intentional*.
Filled tank up, no worries needle shot to F. Today, I had just under half a
tank (between half and a quarter), and I had to do a 180 mile drive round
trip, so I decided to top it off. Filled tank, but needle read 3/4ths. Is
this a dreaded sender shitting the bed? How difficult is it to remove and
replace?

Next question, however I think I know the answer. Directionals and emergency
flashers do not work- flasher unit? How to access to remove and replace? It
is behind the emergency flashers switch, no?

This is a 98 A4 Avant with a 2.8 and 5 speed.
