This is very common on the old CIS cars.  A vacuum leak or other problem 
slowly develops, and someone tweaks the static mixture setting to 
compensate.  This can go on for quite a while before running problems 
can't be eliminated.

If the real problem is then fixed, the car runs like crap because the 
mixture (CO adjustment) is way out of spec.

Anyway, definitely check the WOT switch, it activates at about 2/3 
throttle despite its nickname.
