How to check for sludge ?

Louis-Alain, the only thing I think he could do is peer inside the oil filler 
cap with a flashlight and feel around with a finger, see how it looks/feels. 

It can be a little discolored but there should not be any 'varnish' or sticky 
substances visible or 'feelable'....

Hi Folks,



A friend has an eye on a VW Passat 1.8T 4Motion MT (virtually an A4 with
another body/interior) and is wondering about the sludge issue. The car has
only 70k km (45k miles) but is a 2005. 



Is there a way to inspect the innards without dismantling the engine ?
