How to check for sludge ?

I would say look at records like others have said. Also look at what filter
they are running. If it is like my wife's '03 GTI the correct filter is
huge. Bigger than the one on my diesel Suburban. The old standard filters
fit, but they are not correct. The larger filters add what must be a
significant fraction of a quart to the capacity.
