And the price seems high to me. I paid $6200 for my '99 A4 Avant with V6
and Tiptronic 3 years ago. I got a bargain, but it wasn't a salvage title,
either. A salvage title should reduce the price of a car, by a lot (10-15%?).

As Bill said, it depends on the damage that totaled it. Depending on the
location, damage of 50% of the value of the car can total it. What was the
damage? Flooded with salt water? A scrape along the entire side with all
panels replaced? Did the owner have it repaired right? Or did the seller
buy it at auction, put a lot of Bondo and a quick spray of cheap paint on
it to turn it around for a quick profit?
If I were looking, I'd keep looking.
