Sounds like a sensor dying. When it gets hot, it's dead. When it cools
off, it's good to go again until it gets hot.
You should be able to pull the OBD-I codes. SJM Autotechnik has a great
web site for troubleshooting (NF engine, not the NG, but I *think* it
should be close enough for you):
