NAC VW Eurovan Camper top question

It has a pair of scissor hinges at the back, and a pair of hydraulic
struts in the middle. It appears that the struts are all that lifts
the top, but with new ones in there, there is no chance of that. I'm
not sure what I'm missing, and haven't worked on enough of the camper
EV's to know how exactly it's supposed to work. I do know that
although I'm fairly strong, I can't begin to lift the top myself as
it's currently configured. So, there has to be something I'm missing
here. I'll snap a few pics in a bit and send them to you.

When the side bars are vertical the elbow joint will go over center and lock in position just by being over center hitting a stop.
