Grant;
I wasn't trying to correct or refute you personally. Sorry if it came across as such.
It was merely intended as a praise for the WR G2 to which I can testify on my own car as defying the old adage.
I'm quite aware they aren't cheap, after buying a set, and I know not everyone can afford such a tire. I had to stretch the budget, and compromise elsewhere to do so. However when my phone doesn't ring with my wife having slid off the road or unable to reach her destination in Denver winters, their value is more justifiable.
And yes - my daily ride uses 2 less expensive sets for summer and winter, as I want more summer performance, occasionally tracking the car, and "sort of" tracking it on the way to work through my favorite bends and corners if you know what I mean, even in the winter. So I fully understand the "compromise" term for the hot shoe, to whom anything less than 2 sets is unacceptable.

its still a good summary for 90% of the a/s tires out there.
And in my case its not what i've heard. Its what i've driven on, many quite recently (say, 5 years).
I agree that the WR is - and has been for some time - the best compromise by far.
Its also limited availability and last i checked, almost silly expensive. Fully twice the street price of the tires i suggested originally (e.g.: HTR whatevers). So under most circumstances i suggest having two sets of tires if you need real snow performance, or, conversely, real performance. e.g.: on a track, even well regarded, Z-rated, super-performance a/s (e.g.: michelin PS a/s - my vote as best overall of the bunch) dont perform and dont last.
So true a/s perf, without significant compromise, remains an elusive goal.

I have always heard that statement as conventional wisdom regarding "all season" tires. It used to be true. No longer. The Nokian WR G2 is not cheap, but excellent in the snow, and _very_ good in the wet and dry. I would recommend them for any car needing a year round solution.
Tire compound technology combined with siping has come a long way in the last few years.

A good summary of any alll-season tire, regardless of the cost.
