Been in that situation before, though it wasn't the car keys. They stay in
the car, or I'll loose them :(

You want to bend the hook toward the rear of the door, as that's where the
linkage is that you want to catch. The shim is there to make the job easier.
Otherwise, you have to peel the rubber back, hold it, then insert the coat
hangar. And, it makes sliding it up and down easier as well, since you are
not fighting the rubber seal.
