To the first part, not necessarily. If the female pin(s) is(are) loose due
to widening over time or if the burgundy colored plastic spacer is missing
for example, there could be a point that the vibration of whatever engine
speed brings about the symptoms, but that is pretty rare and doubt this is
your problem.

Next, in short, no. The throttle body can adapt pretty well, but even on
earlier models, will run surprisingly well with MAF disconnected and a
moderate/severe boost leak. For example, my 95 S6 blew an intercooler hose
while swiftly exiting a toll booth, car shut off, i disconnected the MAF
and drove to the next safe place to crawl under and replace without
noticing a problem along the way, though I was babying it at that point.

Fabricating a pressure tester is pretty easy and on that car not difficult
to do. You might find a model specific write-up on one of the fancier
forums with picture hosting, etc..

If you have Vag-Com, aghem, I mean VCDS, you could fare well with a
Throttle Body Alignment and checking/logging the group that shows MAF
function to see if is in accordance with throttle position and/or engine
speed. Great investment either way.
