A4 Radio Stuck in SAFE Mode

Were these radios that 'hot' back in the day that they called for such a crazy method to re-set them?! I can't imagine
anyone wanting the OEM unit in my car...

I could be mistaken, but I'm fairly certain that the key must be in the on position. Driving for an hour is acceptable.
