Service Question -- 2001 Passat

 My friends 2001 Passat has a torn outer CV boot. In looking at the composition of the parts in the CV kit at the "Parts Geek" it appears that the CV joint is secured to the axle with a bolt. They also show a spring clip; can anyone tell me where this goes? Any details about the process of replacing the boot will be appreciated.
