Big question. I'll provide more info when i have more time.

Short answer: The bolt holds the axel to the hub. The spring clip is a circlip and snap into a channel, locking the joint to the half-shaft. Get the Bentley manual. There are several write-ups (for audis of various vintages) on Audiworld.com

You need to jack the car, remove the axel nut ( which is like 250 lb-ft), remove either an upper or lower control arm, wiggle out the shaft, and either repair/repack or replace the half-shaft. Get a good one. I strongly recommend raxles.com

They also show a spring clip; can anyone tell me where this goes? Any details about the process of replacing the boot will be appreciated.
