Inexpensive interface for newer CAN vehicles ?

I have a code reader, a generic OBD-11 device. That's OK for code reading
and code erasing, but I want a more "intrusive" device that'll let me
reprogram things and more important still, diagnose these cars. A proper
diagnosis on a multiplexed vehicle involves following a structure that will
prevent replacement of good parts and have access to the latest technical
service bulletins.

As an example, last fall our SAAB showed a code : bought the code reader,
found it was P0134. It's a code for a defective oxygen sensor. There is 2
sensors on this car and both grounds are from the same wire. Natural
solution : replace one then the other or both cause the car is 100k miles.
BUT, a quick saabnet search showed numerous cases of O2 sensors replacement
and still the same code.

How come? Well, a TSB was issued for a defective connection IN the wiring
harness. We found the TSB, read it, and opened the wiring harness about 1
inch below the last zip-tie before the ECU (that was what the TSB said). We
striped the heatshrink protector to find a little steel/nickel/chrome crimp
that connected 2 wires. It looked perfect, no corrosion, no dust, nothing,
perfect. Nonetheless, we cut it, and added a piece of wire that we soldered
with silvery stuff. Code is gone, and has been since September.

That's why I want a device that will do more than read codes.

-----Message d'origine-----

there are vag-com clones on ebay, btu i feel we should support ewe.
Plus, hsi work.

There are several code readers available all over from $40-80. They
suffice and are easier to use, configure, etc than vag-com (which
requires using a PC)

There is also an iPhone app which i have not tried.
