Inexpensive interface for newer CAN vehicles ?

my experience: i got vag-com last century when my ur-q was suffering a
high idle speed (2500rpm on occasion). the shop diagnosed a failed isv
and wanted $650 for the unit with a 1 week supply. i purchased vag-com
from uwe for about $400 (iirc) and diagnosed a failed temperature sender
at the back of the i5 block (it was telling vag-com that the temp was
-35c). i got the shop to replace the sender and saved myself $500.

actually the likely scenario was that shop would have replaced the isv and
then told me that there was another problem" (the sender) which needed
additional work.

from that point on, for me, vag-com has been free.
