Exploding car batteries

An offshoot of the starter thread:

In my HS Physics class way back in 1979, we had a lab where Mr. Blackburn used Sears DieHard batteries as the source of EMF for various projects.

One fine day, we all took a test in the class room. When we were finished, we would head to the lab in an adjoining room. One wise arse decided he liked making sparks by placing a "buss bar" across the terminals of a DieHard. Explosion occurred, teacher had to wash the boy down and decided to keep the shirt he was wearing in a dishpan, allowing the rest of us to see what sulfuric acid did to a cotton dress shirt.

Now you go into an AutoZone and they always put the batteries that are under charging processes inside safety containers.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY...that is all I can say.
