One reason I can think of is the fact that baby seats are now mandatory.
That uses lots of precious inches of front seat travel when the little ones
are sitting with the legs straightened. Back in the day, babies were in the
mother's arms, and the rest of the bunch was piled randomly on the back
seat. For my small family of four, an A6 is the smallest I can think of in
the actual Audi fleet. When the girls will be older (they are now 2 and 5),
I would consider an A4 Avant or a Golf Wagon (Jetta wagon, for you south of
the border). But if I could convince myself and Honey of buying a mini-SUV,
that would be feasible : the upright seating position does wonder for
interior space in a short vehicle.

It's interesting looking at the dimensions. The A4 has a wheelbase
longer by 4 inches, while the V8 is 6 inches longer overall.
Otherwise, all of the measurements are quite close - interior volume
is a difference of only 1 cubic foot, for example.

Can't say I blame Audi for some of the changes, though. The back seat
in my now-departed B5 A4 was tiny, and one of the reasons we
eventually replaced the car.
