I'm at the point in college tuition-ville where I will potentially need to think
about replacing my A4 (came close to it late last year when
it was leaking coolant from several places, then the fuel pump went...) but
can't afford another new Audi. I really like the Jetta TDI wagon,
but unfortunately, the new iteration of the Jetta really turns me off - they
have really dumbed it down in an effort to increase sales. The
Mk V version, with the twin-clutch automated manual trans, navi and big sunroof
was MSRP of around $26k.

Of course, every time I drive my car, I want to keep it forever. Now if I can
just find the money to replace the head unit with one from
Crutchfield that has an iPod input, that would make it perfect (once I replace
the driver's window regulator ;-)...

One reason I can think of is the fact that baby seats are now mandatory.
That uses lots of precious inches of front seat travel when the little ones
are sitting with the legs straightened. Back in the day, babies were in the
mother's arms, and the rest of the bunch was piled randomly on the back
seat. For my small family of four, an A6 is the smallest I can think of in
the actual Audi fleet. When the girls will be older (they are now 2 and 5),
I would consider an A4 Avant or a Golf Wagon (Jetta wagon, for you south of
the border). But if I could convince myself and Honey of buying a mini-SUV,
that would be feasible : the upright seating position does wonder for
interior space in a short vehicle.

It's interesting looking at the dimensions. The A4 has a wheelbase
longer by 4 inches, while the V8 is 6 inches longer overall.
Otherwise, all of the measurements are quite close - interior volume
is a difference of only 1 cubic foot, for example.

Can't say I blame Audi for some of the changes, though. The back seat
in my now-departed B5 A4 was tiny, and one of the reasons we
eventually replaced the car.
